My discovery of different types of cuisines and where to find them.

Updated: Feb 11, 2021

I would say for myself that I'm a huge foodie. My food journey started in 2015 when I got my first summer job at a 2 Michelin star restaurant called Hiša Franko. My father is close to the owners and at the young age of 15, I got lucky getting a job. I was working for Ana Roš for one month as a waiter and It was an experience I would never forget. In the beginning, It was hard as It was something new to me but after one week It became easier. The restaurant is a slow food type and that is where I was introduced to It. I was able to try different dishes from the menu for free while the guests pay for it around 100 Euros per person. As you can see Hiša Franko is a high-end restaurant and not visited by students, but It is an experience you won't forget. In 2018 and the beginning of my relationship my food pallet changed. I was never too curious about other cuisines, but that changed with my girlfriend. She likes to travel just like me and she introduced me to Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, and Indian cuisine. She likes to try new dishes and also cooks them very well. I will list some restaurants in Slovenia and what type of cuisines they serve. I have visited all of them and would highly recommend:

Han: It is a Chinese restaurant located in various parts of Ljubljana. I have eaten there many times. The staff, there is very nice and the prices are not high. They serve authentic Chinese dishes at low prices and with special deals for students.

Grič: Is a slow food restaurant near Horjul(20 minutes out of Ljubljana). They were awarded 1 Michelin star in 2020 and would have to say they deserved it. They serve Slovenian high-end type dishes. They serve 2 types of menus(vegetarian and meat ). I went there with my girlfriend and my parents and I think we were there for 3-4 hours.

Steakhouse Argentino: My girlfriend and I have eaten there for Valentine's day and said that we will come back. I choose a meat menu and she chooses fish and we were more than satisfied. It was 70 Euros for both of us. The ambient was very romantic and the staff was friendly and talkative. It is located in a shopping center in Ljubljana.

Hiša pod gradom: It is located right under the Ljubljana castle(Hiša pod gradom=House under the castle). We ordered takeout twice during the pandemic and we were more than satisfied. They are known for their very delicious pizza rolls. And two pizza rolls per person is more than enough ;).

Stara kašča: The restaurant is located in the city of Vrhnika(15 minutes from Ljubljana). They are known for their burgers, pork ribs, and their two authentic pizzas(Kašča and David). The staff is very helpful and I would recommend Brodka(vodka made out of bread).

Moysushi: A small sushi restaurant located in the center of Ljubljana is a must for all sushi lovers.

Zebra patisseries: It's a small pastry shop located in the suburbs of Ljubljana. They have very expensive but delicious eclairs.

Romeo: Romeo is a Mexican restaurant right next to Ljubljanica in the center of Ljubljana. They are most known for their pancakes which are huge and cheap.

Stari Pisker: Current hit of Slovenia is located in Celje. Me and my girlfriend went there for our 2 year anniversary and let's just say we were dissapointed. We each got a steak and It is something we won't forget. They are best known for burgers and they should just stick to them :(

I have visited all of these restaurants and would 100% recommend them to anyone who is in Slovenia. I hope you will find something for your taste.
